Anaphylaxis
Important Details about Anaphylaxis
What is anaphylaxis?
The most dangerous kind of allergic reaction is anaphylaxis. Certain triggers, including food (including milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish), bites and stings (including tick and snake bites), and some pharmaceuticals, might cause it to occur. Anaphylaxis should always be dealt with as an illness because it can develop rapidly and be lethal. Anaphylaxis may cause a dangerous decrease in blood pressure if it worsens. We refer to this as “anaphylactic shock.”
What causes anaphylaxis?
When the immune system identifies an innocuous allergen as “dangerous,” it may result in anaphylaxis by producing the natural chemical histamine. When histamine is released into the body, inflammation occurs. Each person goes through allergic symptoms differently. They also rely upon the kind of allergen and the route of entry (e.g., eaten, administered topically, or inhaled) of the allergen into the body. Numerous bodily systems, particularly the skin, digestive tract, and—most dangerously—the respiratory and circulatory systems, might be affected by this response of the immune system.
What are the symptoms of anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis symptoms can include any of the following: coughing or ongoing coughing; pale and floppy (young children); difficult or noisy breathing; problems talking and/or hoarse voice; a swollen tongue; persistent dizziness or collapse; enlargement or tightness in the throat. On occasion, less serious symptoms such as welts or hives, vomiting, or swelling of the mouth, lips, and/or eyes present before anaphylaxis.

What should I do if someone is experiencing anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis patient care: Lay the person being treated flat and restrain them; do not allow them to stand or move. Put them in a recovering posture if they are not conscious. Let them sit with their legs extended if they are having difficulty inhaling or if they want to get up, but do not let them stand or move. If an auto-injector for adrenaline is available, inject it. If nothing occurs after five minutes, more doses of adrenaline might be provided. Take the patient to the hospital so they can be monitored for at least four hours.
How can I prevent anaphylaxis?
All allergens and stimuli should be ignored by people with verified allergies. They should also always have a medical alert device, an anaphylactic action plan, and two adrenaline auto-injectors (if recommended). Making sure your loved ones are aware of how to follow your anaphylactic action plan in case you want support is a smart idea.
